Work Based Learning: Revitalizing Portsmouth's Old Dockyard Into a Creative Hub

Revitalizing Portsmouth's Old Dockyard Into a Creative Hub

Understanding the needs of the client is essential for designing environments that adhere to their vision. Our team recently concentrated on precisely that—adhering to our client’s demands and preferences—in our presentation. To do this, we conducted in-depth research about our client Deniz, her design aesthetic, and the numerous design methodologies she used. We learned that Deniz's interest is conservation and restoration work, where the goal is to maintain the natural beauty of historic structures while implementing little design changes.

Our main objective was to come up with designs that emphasised the historic building's original attractiveness. We tried to emphasise its noteworthy qualities rather than obscure them. With this strategy, we had to carefully analyse the resources that were initially employed to build. In the course of our investigation, we discovered that lime was crucial to the building process. We investigated the special qualities and advantages of incorporating lime as a fundamental component in our design as a result of this discovery.

We performed an experiment by combining two tiny pieces of fabric with concrete and lime plaster to see what we could come up with.

For all of us, it was a very novel and fascinating experience. The experiment was successful. And using various textures, we produced stunning results. It was a really interesting group project.

The particular needs of the project eventually determine whether cloth with concrete or lime plaster is a superior material. In applications where high strength, durability, and the capacity to mould intricate shapes are required, cloth reinforced with concrete excels. For structural elements exposed to strong loads or possible impacts, its fabric reinforcement provides outstanding tensile strength and impact resistance. On the other hand, lime plaster excels at delivering permeable, aesthetically beautiful coatings that control moisture and support a healthier interior environment. When it comes to historical restorations, where authenticity and sustainability are crucial, it is especially well-suited.

In order to increase our expertise regarding our project, we also conducted various case studies.

The study of conservative historical building case studies has made clear the complex and delicate dance between upholding the past and embracing the present. It has demonstrated to us how enriching our lives, enhancing our communities, and creating a strong bond with the history of humanity are all made possible by respecting our architectural legacy. So that their histories can be passed down through the ages, let's keep cherishing and safeguarding these wonderful structures.
